DOOH Guide
Everything you need to know about outdoor LED advertising displays in India — specifications, planning, brightness requirements, and building a DOOH media network.
Outdoor LED displays have transformed advertising in India. From roadside hoardings and mall fascia to transit stations and building-mounted media, digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising powered by LED technology delivers higher engagement, flexible content, and measurable impact compared to traditional static hoardings.
| Specification | Minimum Requirement | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 5,000 nits | 6,500 – 8,000 nits |
| IP Rating (Front) | IP65 | IP65 or IP66 |
| IP Rating (Rear) | IP54 | IP65 |
| Operating Temperature | -10°C to 50°C | -20°C to 60°C |
| Pixel Pitch (roadside, 10–20m) | P6 | P5 – P6 |
| Pixel Pitch (close range, 5–10m) | P4 | P3 – P4 |
| Refresh Rate | 1,920 Hz | 3,840 Hz |
| Brightness Auto-Control | Recommended | BCS sensor with 16-level dimming |
The rule for outdoor pixel pitch: divide the minimum viewing distance (in metres) by 1,000 to get the approximate maximum pixel pitch (in mm). For a display viewed from 6m minimum, P6 is appropriate. For a 10m minimum distance, P10 is sufficient and significantly cheaper per sqm.
Large format (10×20m to 10×40m) P8–P10 displays on gantry or monopole structures. High brightness is critical — we recommend 8,000 nits with auto-dimming to comply with night-time glare regulations.
Medium-format (4×6m to 6×10m) P4–P6 displays mounted to building exteriors. Require structural load assessment and, typically, municipal advertising approval.
Smaller formats (2×4m) in high-footfall locations. Robust construction and front-serviceable design critical as access for maintenance is constrained.
P4–P5 displays at close-range pedestrian viewing distances. Often network-managed across hundreds of units via 4G connectivity.
P6–P10 displays around stadium perimeter boards, plus fine-pitch scoreboards. High refresh rate (3,840Hz) essential for broadcast-compatible operation.
💡 DOOH network tip: If you're operating multiple outdoor displays as a media network, integrate a cloud-based CMS that supports time-slot selling, proof-of-play reporting, and remote brightness control. Cosmic View can recommend and configure the right platform for your scale.
In most Indian cities, outdoor digital advertising requires approval from the municipal authority. Key requirements typically include:
Quick Answers
In direct Indian summer sunlight, a minimum of 6,000 nits is required for comfortable readability. 8,000 nits is recommended for west-facing or south-facing displays that receive prolonged direct sun. Auto-brightness control then reduces output to 200–800 nits at night for energy saving and glare compliance.
Outdoor displays connect via 4G LTE modem (for remote locations) or wired Ethernet/fibre. A cloud-based DOOH CMS platform manages content scheduling, proof-of-play logging, remote brightness control, and fault monitoring across all screens in the network.
IP65-rated outdoor LED displays are designed to operate in all Indian weather conditions including monsoon humidity, dust, and 45°C+ summer temperatures. Rated lifespan is 100,000 hours (approximately 10+ years). Cosmic View provides a 3-year comprehensive warranty on all outdoor installations.
Yes. A DOOH scheduling platform divides the screen time into slots (e.g., 10 seconds per advertiser, cycling 6 advertisers per minute). You can sell spots to multiple brands and manage the schedule remotely. Cosmic View can set up the full content management infrastructure.
